Dr. Ricardo Ortegón Presents at Montclair State University’s Hispanic Student College Institute for Fourth Consecutive Year

Planning for College

A Growing Program with a Powerful Mission

Dr. Ricardo Ortegón, founder of GPS College Guidance, returned to Montclair State University this summer to present at the Hispanic Student College Institute (HSCI) for the fourth consecutive year. This multi-day program is designed to introduce rising high school juniors and seniors to the possibilities of higher education. It continues to grow in both popularity and reach. This year, registration filled early, and organizers had to close it ahead of schedule due to high demand.

HSCI continues to gain momentum. Attendance has grown each year, and for the first time, registration filled to capacity ahead of schedule, prompting organizers to close sign-ups early. This enthusiastic response reflects the program’s reputation for delivering meaningful content and engaging experiences for college-bound students.

An Engaging and Impactful Presentation

Dr. Ortegon’s session, titled “Planning for College,” offered students a comprehensive and practical overview of the college admissions process. True to his interactive style, Dr. Ortegón incorporated questions throughout the presentation, awarding prizes to students who answered correctly. This approach encouraged participation, sparked conversation, and helped students feel more confident in discussing their college plans.

The session was filled with energy and enthusiasm as students actively engaged with the material. The prize component added a fun and motivating element, while also reinforcing important takeaways about navigating the path to college.

Students Who Show Up and Stand Out

Following the presentation, Dr. Ortegón participated in the program’s student networking event. He was impressed by the students' professionalism and preparation. Many of them followed up with thoughtful questions related to his session and showed a genuine interest in learning more.

These conversations highlighted one of the program’s most valuable aspects. HSCI not only introduces students to higher education but also helps them develop essential skills such as self-advocacy, communication, and goal setting.

Shared Values and a Shared Commitment

While at the event, Dr. Ortegón had the opportunity to reconnect with Dr. Audrey Fisch, President of More Than Bootstraps, a nonprofit based in Passaic, New Jersey. Dr. Ortegón serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. More Than Bootstraps offers mentorship, guidance, and support to first-generation and underrepresented students attending public high schools in Passaic who are preparing for college.

The missions of More Than Bootstraps, HSCI, and GPS College Guidance are closely aligned. Each organization is deeply committed to expanding college access and supporting students as they pursue higher education. These efforts are most effective when built on collaboration, shared purpose, and a belief in every student’s potential.

Supporting the Next Generation of College Students

Dr. Ortegón remains a strong advocate for programs that help students understand the college process and equip them with the necessary tools to succeed. His continued involvement with HSCI reflects the core values of GPS College Guidance and its mission to guide students with clarity, care, and expertise.

GPS College Guidance extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Katia Goldfarb, Marilyn Moya, Marco Cordova, and the entire HSCI team. Their dedication and leadership continue to create life-changing opportunities for students in New Jersey and across the country.
