GPS College Guidance Founder Dr. Ricardo Ortegón Earns Professional Membership in the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA)
Recognition Reflects More Than Three Decades of Experience Helping Students Navigate Higher Education
GPS College Guidance is proud to announce that its founder and principal consultant, Dr. Ricardo Ortegón, has been awarded Professional Membership in the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), one of the most respected and recognized organizations in the educational consulting profession.
Professional Membership is granted only to consultants who meet rigorous standards related to educational background, professional experience, student advising, campus visits, and professional references. The designation recognizes consultants who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to ethical practice, professional development, and excellence in serving students and families.
To qualify for Professional Membership, applicants must demonstrate:
A minimum of three years of experience in educational placement counseling or admissions, including at least one year of independent educational consulting.
An advanced degree or equivalent professional preparation.
Extensive experience advising students through the educational planning and admissions process.
Significant evaluative campus visit experience.
Professional references from respected colleagues and educational professionals.
For Dr. Ortegón, the recognition represents the culmination of a career spanning more than 30 years in higher education and college access.
"Helping students discover educational opportunities that align with their goals, strengths, and aspirations has been the focus of my professional life," said Dr. Ortegón. "Earning Professional Membership in IECA is both an honor and a reflection of my commitment to providing students and families with informed, ethical, and personalized guidance throughout the college admissions process."
Prior to founding GPS College Guidance in 2021, Dr. Ortegón served in senior leadership positions at several colleges and universities, including American University, Emerson College, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Montclair State University, and Texas A&M International University. Throughout his career, he has led admissions, enrollment management, academic advising, student success, graduate enrollment, and international education initiatives, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the higher education landscape from both the institutional and student perspectives.
Dr. Ortegón holds a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from Northeastern University, a Master of Business Administration in International Trade from Texas A&M International University, and has completed additional professional training in Strategic Enrollment Management and Diversity and Inclusion.
Professional Membership in IECA requires applicants to demonstrate substantial experience advising students, complete extensive campus visits, and provide references from respected professionals within the educational community. Candidates must also possess advanced educational credentials and a proven track record of helping students navigate educational placement and admissions processes.
A key component of Dr. Ortegón's counseling philosophy is maintaining firsthand knowledge of colleges and universities. During the past year alone, he participated in more than 40 college tours and campus visits throughout the United States, meeting directly with admission officers, faculty members, and student affairs professionals.
"There is no substitute for experiencing a campus in person," Dr. Ortegón explained. "Every visit provides valuable insight into a college's culture, academic environment, student support systems, and opportunities for engagement. These experiences allow me to provide families with guidance that goes beyond rankings and marketing materials."

In addition to his consulting practice, Dr. Ortegón serves on the Board of Directors of More Than Bootstraps and the Advisory Boards of the Hispanic Scholarship Consortium and CollegePlannerPro. He regularly presents college planning and scholarship workshops and remains actively involved in professional organizations including the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC), and the Potomac & Chesapeake Association for College Admissions Counseling (PCACAC).

"Remaining actively engaged with professional organizations and college campuses ensures that the guidance I provide is current, accurate, and centered on helping students identify institutions where they can thrive academically, socially, and personally."
Founded in 1976, the Independent Educational Consultants Association is the leading professional association for educational consultants worldwide. Its members are committed to maintaining the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and student-centered advising.
As GPS College Guidance continues to grow, this achievement reinforces the firm's commitment to delivering expert, personalized college admissions counseling grounded in decades of higher education leadership and firsthand knowledge of colleges and universities across the country.
